BABU, the Three Legged Dog
About the Project
In the Fall of 2012, Krishnan Sundaram approached me with the idea that my class illustrate his book about Babu. I was immediately intrigued that Krishnan's aspiration was to educate others about inclusivity through the adventures of his three legged dog, Babu. Also integral to the project was the idea that "life goes on" and can and should be joyful, full and normal when we face challenges, like Babu did when he lost his leg. The students in my modified grade 4,5,6 class immediately became inspired by the project and set to work illustrating the story to bring Krishnan's words to life. The result is this book . We would like to thank the Community Learning Centre (CLC) Initiative of Quebec and the Howell family for their financial support of this project. To get a copy of the book, contact Lisa
About the Author
Krishnan Sundaram Krishnan, born in Montreal, is an animal enthusiast who grew up in a house filled with cats, dogs, snakes, lizards, birds, fish, and rodents. A composer and multi-instrumentalist, he would write songs about his animals and the stories that came with them. Now living in Gatineau, Quebec and through his involvement in a community program hand drumming with children, he was able to connect with a group of students who were willing to illustrate one of those extraordinary stories. Babu was born with four legs. After a car accident he was left with only three. A lot of people were very sad. But Babu persevered, he recovered, and continued to run and play with his friends and the other animals like nothing ever happened. The other animals treated him the same way as before. Krishnan wants to share Babu's attitude and the other animal's attitude towards him as an inspiration to people and to show how we also can overcome challenges and treat each other with love and respect. He would like to thank Lisa Howell, Pierre Elliott Trudeau Elementary School, and all the students from room 224 for supporting this project and making it come to life.
